world name: Terreni ( /ter/ ·[nee] )
→ earth and its demise: the sun ballooned into a red giant, making our planet uninhabitable.
→ new world discovered within the Andromeda Galaxy. Technology was developed for swift relocation, and a colony was formed on a planet within the new solar system; equipped with its own Sun-like star. Animal species were in short supply, as well as plants, so they were guarded and taken care of.
→ bred animals and planted crops, eventually incorporating indigenous animals and foliage. Mutation of both, as well as of humans, due to eating of the natural plants and wildlife.
→ physicality of natives:→ light to tan skin
→ varying hair/eye color
→ born with unique markings on their body
→ do not dream
→ may experience mental instability due to traumatic experiences
→ one inclusive language: al-language
→ technology consists of all things simple (i.e. plumbing, sanitation systems)
→ solar-power energy sources
→ climate/geography/habitat
→ the planet’s makeup is similar to earth one
→ average temperature of 68 year-round
→ no rain
→ no extreme heat or cold
→ two closely orbiting planets visible from Terreni’s surface
→ both unnamed; planet one has a cracked ring, the other resembles Terreni
→ single moon and stars visible at night
Marked individuals, the majority, are placed in appropriate fields and are meant to contribute in a meaningful way to Terreni society. Unmarked individuals, the minority, are allocated positions in non-ability oriented fields and are still required to contribute. Mismarked individuals, rare, are unaccepted by society and are subsequently removed.
Marked:
→ all marks are nature-based; they affect the environment in some way but not its people
→ marks appear at birth
→ abilities mature as the body does
→ growth of ability is natural but can be developed through practice
→ designate future career, which solidifies the general knowledge that everyone is born with one purpose
For example, a child born with flower petal markings may have an inclination to help flowers grow.
Unmarked:
→ no markings or abilities
→ general laborers; jobs or careers that are not based upon ability
For example, a child born without markings or abilities might be best suited to a position that requires no gift such as refuse removal, cleaning, cooking; etc.
Mismarked:
→ powers don’t match markings
→ no marks but still manifest abilities
→ marked but with no abilities
All mental abilities are considered Mismarked and unacceptable. For example, a child born with no marks but can enable a fruit tree to bear a larger number of produce OR a child born with marks but no discernible abilities.
Grade 1: singular, stationary, and black markings
→ typically faint abilities
Grade 2: multiple, stationary, and black markings.
→ slightly stronger abilities
Grade 3: single, moving, colored or black markings.
→ may have single or multiple abilities that are stronger and each associated to the other possessed ability
Grade 4: multiple, moving, colored or black markings.
→ multiple or single abilities, typically of a higher power level
Each child is pre-screened around six years old for determined occupations to ensure that they are functional and not Mismarked and are only schooled in that field once decided. They receive a general education from parents that consist of basic skills (reading, writing, some math, etc.) and enters school of chosen field at age seven.
Kai's life can be summed up in one easy way: the simplest of dreams, perfect enough that it made up for the fact that his people didn't dream to begin with. He was born to two marked and loving parents, a father who cultivated the earth as a farmer and a mother who worked to help encourage the growing crops of their colony. He was the youngest of three siblings and as such was practically considered the baby of the family, even at twenty-one years of age. His upbringing was as normal as could be, without the slightest of discrepancy and Kai was happy for it, it had created a long standing ambience of peace, like a still pool. Over the years Kai managed to cultivate a reputation among his family and peers of being an angel; he was never one to stir up trouble and he was at his happiest when making other people happy in the smallest of ways, whether it be his family or anyone else he happened to stumble upon, he wasn't in the business of making enemies, rather he tried his best to be a picture of positivity in their calm world.
When it came to getting tested, the pride Kai's parents had for him fluorished further... discovering at a young age that he was not just marked and as such holding up a happy tradition for their family, but he also fell under the third grade of power, the waves on his arm regularly swelling and ebbing to travel along his skin in a chaotic pattern. This position guaranteed him a job working with the water of their world, specifically helping with irrigation and plumbing systems. It was a job that took him away from his family, something that at first caused him pain but then just worked to expand his horizons. After years of tutelage he was send out across the planet, travelling to the ocean to start working on it.
For Kai, this was just as perfect, it gave him the chance to meet new people, to travel their planet and continue learning, living and taking the secret pleasure of adding to the people he knew as if every life he touched enriched his own in some way. He never forgot a face or a name, instead, he kept all of them as a catalogue of kind souls that had some way brushed against his own, a quiet thing kept within his head that brought him pleasure whenever he found himself alone. Maybe it wasn't normal, to take such pleasure in every interaction, but it was his.
Eventually as his work continued, it brought his team closer and closer to people again and occasionally further from the ocean; now he tends to work on the underground systems closest to people. It was sometimes a challenging job, but Kai didn't have a problem with it. In his head he'd built it up to be the best way to help the largest amount of people possible, something that filled him again with happiness... it was like what his work was touched everyone, but he didn't need the acknowledgement for it to be pleased about it. It was the turning on of a tap, the ability to wash clothing, watching their flora grow. He knew he wasn't the only cog, but this was a boy that took joy in being part of one large wheel, returning eagerly day after day to work only to come home not at all diminished for it, even if his heart belonged in some way to the waves of the ocean, its waters feeling just as much a part of him as his personality.
